When the cyclotetramerization reaction was carried out in the presence of anhydrous CuCl2, insoluble polymeric species were obtained with the metallophthalocyanine.
The desired product 5 was separated from insoluble polymeric material by extraction with chloroform. The products 4 and 5 were purified by column chromatography using silica gel as the stationary phase and chloroform–methanol (100:1) mixtures
as the eluent. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of compound 4 with azidomethyl phenyl sulfide was carried out in THF/H2O at room temperature using CuSO45H2O as a catalyst and sodium ascorbate as the reducing agent (Scheme 2). Under these reaction
conditions, metallation of 4 was also observed (Fig. 1). As a natural consequence of the single substituent on each benzo group, the phthalocyanines (4–6)
